They vastly outnumber neurons but unlike them, glial cells do no fire electrical impulses. Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852-1934), pioneer of modern neuroscience, clearly saw nonneuronal cells on his histological samples, but he always left them out of his neuron drawings. These he drew separately, filling numerous pages of his notebooks with the strange cells that often look like grotesque coral sketches. Other scientists thought these cells resembled stars and called them “astrocytes”. That name prevails today for one of the four major types of glial cells now recognized. Most authorities considered these nonneuronal cells as purely non-functional glue for neurons and became known as neuroglia-Latin for “neuro glue”. If these peculiar brain cells had a higher function, Ramón y Cajal knew that their secrets would not be revealed with the primitive tools at his disposal. From the soma (or neuronal body) numerous dendrites branch out like the top of a tree and a single axon travels out like the trunk. Dendrites are the information-receiving place of the neuron. They “broadcast” chemical signals and pass them down to the soma translated in electrical waves. The soma processes all these electrical messages and elaborates an integrated output information. This information is then passed along the axon (Greek word for axis). The length of the axon differs in each neuron, depending on where it usually relays the information it carries. It can span from a fraction of a millimetre in the brain up to over one meter in the spinal cord and peripheral nerves. The axon branches out at the end, comparable to a long trunk of a tree which passes into a widely ramified root system. The root tips are called axonal terminals. Here, the electrical signal carried by the axon is converted into a chemical signal for communicating with the neuron´s target cells. Neurons constantly exchange information.
